FAQ – High Flyers
Who are these courses for?
The High Flyers English courses are for primary school children (German grades 1-4) who speak German and want to learn English.
The courses complement the school programme, i.e. for first and second graders, the course participants discover the English language and culture in a fun way and learn to say simple sentences, sing songs, etc. that are particularly relevant to them. The focus is on speaking. In the third grade, the High Flyers courses explore topics that either expand on those covered in school or are particularly topical, for example festivals such as Christmas or events such as the Olympics or a World Cup. Although the emphasis is still on speaking, we also do some reading and writing. For the fourth graders, the High Flyers courses help to prepare them for secondary school. They speak, read and write.
Do you also offer individual lessons?
Currently we only offer group courses.
Are there also online courses?
We are convinced that especially at primary school age, learning is easier for children in person than via video conferencing. Therefore, we offer face-to-face courses – unless this is prohibited due to the pandemic.
Do you also offer courses for children from grade 5 onwards?
Yes, we do! Every Monday afternoon at 5.40pm there is a group. And we also offer Eager Eagles tutoring. Please contact us if you are interested.
Do you also offer tutoring for children from grade 5 onwards?
Yes, we do! There are currently free slots on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Scroll down for more information under Eager Eagles.
Do you have a hygiene policy?
Yes! We do what we can to prevent the spread of germs. We air the course room once during each session and during the break between groups. The tables are disinfected regularly. When we have our biscuit break, the biscuits are distributed using tongs so only the child touches the biscuit they eat!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.
Chattering Chicks
We run morning English groups at kindergartens for nursery, kindergarten or pre-school children. The focus of these sessions is a fun introduction to the English language, and the children learn by singing, playing and being creative. This experience for our little “knowledge sponges” not only gives them a confidence boost, it also sets the stage for a positive approach to learning English in school, as they are familiar with and have enjoyed the English language at Chattering Chicks. As the price depends on the size, make-up, level and goals of each group, interested kindergartens are welcome to contact me to discuss their needs.
Eager Eagles
Eager Eagles sessions are tailored to the needs of secondary school children who may be struggling with the transition from primary to secondary-level English, or who may be particularly ambitious and want to make faster progress than the school timetable schedules. We offer individual tutoring, tutoring in small groups, and small classes (grades 5-10). Please see the German page or contact us for more details.
All tutoring slots are currently full. Times invariably shift with the new school year, so email us if you are interested.
Prices:
one-to-one: €60
group of 2: €30 per child
group of 3 or 4: €20 per child
English for kindergarten teachers
We live in a wonderful area that is characterised by diversity. Many different people from different cultures live together. Our children go to day care, nursery and kindergarten together, learn from each other and with each other. But while children often play easily together without a common language, it can be all the more difficult when parents and teachers at the Kindertagesstätte (KiTa) want or need to talk to each other, but the parents do not (yet) speak German. Childcare professionals who have concentrated on professional training instead of language courses, or who had English at school but found very little about parenting and childcare in the textbooks, may feel insecure when it comes to talking to parents in English. Maybe they simply don’t have the vocabulary to explain daily routines at the nursery, to describe everyday situations, to formulate emotions, to list things that the children should/can bring with them, or even to address difficult topics. Maybe they just lack the courage to speak out because they haven’t spoken English for years.
This is exactly why we offer an English course that is tailored to the needs of kindergarten teachers. The aim is to refresh English skills and to practice the necessary vocabulary for conversations with parents and children in the KiTa day care centre. The aim is to enable childcare professionals to have confident conversations with non-German-speaking families.
It is less about grammatical rules and less about error-free sentences. More importantly, the focus is on being able to communicate with parents – and children – in English. It will often be the case that the parents are not native English speakers either, but that English as a “world language” builds the bridge between two cultures. This bridge does not have to be perfect, it does not have to be a masterpiece. The most important thing is that this bridge exists – that everyone has the courage to speak English and dares to speak without every sentence being perfect. The parents of the children in the crèche or kindergarten will be infinitely grateful. And the professionals will also be happier when they feel more confident.
In times of a shortage of skilled workers, such further training is also a recognition for childcare professionals that should not be underestimated. The investment in their language skills makes their daily work a lot easier, and as an added bonus the opportunity to network with professionals from other institutions is extremely valuable.
The feedback from the pilot project was very positive – many participants asked for a continuation of the course (which initially consisted of ten 90-minute units) and there were numerous enquiries from colleagues who, based on the enthusiastic reports, would also like to take part in an English course.
If you are interested in a tailor-made English course for the kindergarten teachers / childcare workers in your institutions, please feel free to contact me. We are also happy to offer courses for childminders.
