A vending machine for fresh ingredients and food? Yes!! The REGIOMAT (a combination of REGIOnal and autoMAT (the word for (dispensing) machine – like the Geldautomat is the cash machine) is an increasingly popular way for farmers to sell their produce directly to customers. They have the added benefit of being available 24/7, so even if you get caught out when the shops are closed, you can always find enough ingredients to be able to conjure up a feast! I love these innovative vending machines, and as they are often in more rural settings, visiting one can often be combined with a lovely walk. Here are a couple of my favourites:
Hildmann’s Hofladen Regiomat in Kronberg-Oberhöchstadt. You can park right by the two machines, and depending on the season there is a great selection of eggs (the hens live in fields just around the corner), potatoes, apples, crisps (aka chips), vegetable crisps, cucumbers, honey, pasta, soup, pre-cooked meals in a jar, sliced cold cuts, salami, meat (like Leberwurst, Mettwurst) in a tin, sausages (from the local butcher Metzgerei Klein). You can pay cash or with your debit card. Link to website
Hof Wilhelmshöhe Regiomat in Bad Soden im Taunus. You can park by the machines, and there is a lovely walk across the fields that you can do starting/ending there. Children will love the playground that is just around the corner. The selection here is huge, ranging from ice cream to wine! And of course the more typical eggs, meat & sausages, milk, cold cuts & salami. Here, too, you can pay cash or with your card (which is also used to check your age if you want to purchase wine.)
